Waze released a new update that allows electric vehicle (EV) drivers to search for chargers along their route.
EV drivers can enter their vehicle information into the app, including their preferred plug type.
When a route is set, drivers will have the option to select EV charging via a button from the route options display screen.
A set of options will appear along the driver’s route.
In the app, each station will display outlet types, number of outlets on site, charging speeds and hours of operation for drivers.
Additional instructions on how to locate chargers are also provided.
In a statement from Waze, the software claims to include up-to-date charging station information based on feedback from the Waze community.
“Charging station information is often inconsistent, outdated or unreliable, creating a major problem for EV drivers,” Waze said.
“You can rest assured that Waze will help you find a charging station along the way.”
A Waze spokesperson has confirmed that the new update will be a permanent feature of the app.
The update is yet to roll out globally, but it looks like there are still a few issues to fix before its global launch.
Electrek reports that the app, for at least one electric vehicle owner, still displayed information about gas stations and did not allow them to enter a plug type.
Waze isn’t the only app under the Google umbrella to get new features focused on electric vehicles.
Google recently announced new EV features for Google Maps on vehicles with Android Automotive, such as the VolvoC40 And XC40 refill And Polestar 2which suggests the “best stop” for charging based on your charge level, expected power consumption and current traffic.
It also lets you search specifically for “very fast” chargers, capable of 150kW or more, and displays whether locations have on-site charging stations.
